Kamal Gill evokes a plethora of emotions through this gripping fiction, bringing back the flashes from 1984.

An extremely powerful story of a young girl from Punjab, from her early childhood through her life till middle age. Circumstances shuffled her around and subjected her to such cruelties as made her feel like a ship without a rudder. After being left alone, she had to fend for herself when both her parents disappeared. Her finding herself in the eye of the storm during the riots in Delhi in 1984, her shocked reactions to the incidents and the trauma that followed, her nightmare experiences as domestic help, the involvement of the owner of the house in dubious activities, her disillusionment and running away from that set up just to find herself faced with the question of survival-all climax naturally in scenes of violence, dejection, and despair.

The reader does not fail to sympathize with the protagonist even for her cruelty. With this literal and figurative presentation of the story, the author has created a niche for herself. The refreshing and enthralling incidents of the story are wholly absorbing. They give you chills so often that you stay hooked on the novel until the end. The protagonist dealt with all the harshness, even the heartbreak, with unwavering optimism. This delicate thread of optimism binds you to the protagonist and keeps on evoking strong pathos in you. The initial external storm settles in due course but the internal turmoil never ends.

‘I dipped my toes in the river of fiction to recreate certain traumas, deeply embedded in history which were suffered by many and which caused irreparable damage to the ones who survived,’ the author said.

The author pulled many a heartstring and left a mark with an unapologetically realistic delivery.

Born and brought up in Patiala, Punjab, the author is a 2011 batch HCS officer. She had already written two books of poetry besides this debut fiction work.

Published by White Falcon Publishing, the book is available for sale in India and internationally.
